kkako

Case – 16 September 2021

Kōkako roasts Fairtrade organic specialty coffee in Auckland, New Zealand. From humble beginnings as a coffee cart in Aotea Square in 2001, they’ve grown considerably over the last 20 years, now supplying coffee and drinking chocolate to cafés, restaurants, retailers and businesses all over New Zealand!

Green coffee & reducing climate footprint
Kōkako finds quality incredibly important and they work with various cooperatives and traders to source green coffee from Fairtrade organic farms across the world. All Kōkako coffee and drinking chocolate has been certified Fairtrade and BioGro Organic since 2009. In addition, Kōkako has always tried to find innovative and sustainable ways to package its ethically sourced products which include certified Fairtrade Organic Coffee, Drinking Chocolate and Nitro Cold Brew.

Besides, Kōkako is now looking beyond avoiding climate change to understanding how they can help their supply chain become prepared and resilient to the changes.

Although we can't control how our suppliers run their business we can choose to work with a supply chain for green coffee, cocoa and sugar that considers and protects farmers from climate change, empowering them to mitigate its impact by implementing several climate change resilient initiatives.

Additionally, Kōkako continues to influence the industry to be more aware of this and encourage other roasters to consider ways they can participate in Climate Change mitigation.

The future
In order to reduce their CO2 -emissions, Kōkako will focus on changing their vehicle fleet from hybrid vehicles to buying their first electric vehicle in 2021, promoting regenerative organics, reducing packaging by supplying coffee to local business in returnable buckets and growing their share of the NZ coffee market by getting consumers to buy FairClimateFund accredited coffee.

There is no plan B!
Since 2016 they have partnered with FairClimateFund to offset the carbon on every kilo of coffee they roast. Kōkako chose to compensate carbon credits at FairClimateFund because

There is no plan B, we only have one earth and we must work fast to look after it for future generations.

In addition, Kōkako likes the fact that their offsets directly contribute to climate mitigation in Ethiopian communities that they already purchase coffee from, reinforcing a link to a circular economy approach.
